This is the fourth book published by robnoxious, a collection of creative non-fiction including pain and happiness, laughter, friendship and isolation, travel, cats and dogs, drinking, and even more than all that.
It’s difficult to accurately describe what this book is about. It’s the stories that make up one guy’s life. It’s about building a boat and taking it down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers with a boat punk flotilla of friends. It’s about eating what comes out of a dumpster or is given in friendship and cooking it over a stick fire. It’s about meeting cool people and just hanging out, hustling to sell a few zines, and in the midst of it all, having a killer ear infection and having to go to the hospital. It’s about living in a house when folks have stopped paying the rent and recovering the bike a thief has grabbed during an unguarded moment behind the Little Ceasers. It’s beautiful and ordinary, mundane and extraordinary, all at the same time.
These regular, magical moments are happening to all of us, all the time, but robnoxious manages to capture such moments in words and get it all down on paper. His stories often have a breathless, dream-like quality to them. I quickly found myself invested in what was happening to robnoxious, eager to know what would happen next.
I would put this book on the same shelf as Off the Map and Despite Everything; it is a must-read for anyone thrilled by the adventures of everyday life.
